He said: 'It's the first dramatic thing I've been in, the first dramatic character that I've played and I took it personally, I wanted it to come through.' 'It was the sense that I could totally fail and I enjoyed taking that risk as opposed to doing something safe.'
Efron claimed his part as a grief-striken teen mourning the death of his younger brother was more "complex" than his previous roles.
'Charlie St. Cloud still has that wish fulfillment that the audience would expect based on my other films.
'However, it feels more suspenseful, mysterious and supernatural. It is a much more emotional role.
'I hope it serves as a memorable transition into older, more complex characters.'
The Inbetweeners actress Emily Atack, reality star Brigitte Nielsen, and model Danielle Lloyd also attended the premiere.
The Death and Life of Charlie St Cloud is is released in UK cinemas on October 8.
