You might have to take a few looks at these photos to recognize the former squeaky-clean film star.

That's Zac Efron, 22, rocking an impressively full new mustache and beard at the premiere of Charlie St. Cloud in Madrid, Spain.

Combined with his plaid shirt, the High School Musical star seemed to be well on his way to fully-fledged lumberjack.

Efron has been hard at work on the facial hair over past weeks, but has stepped up his game during his recent European press junket for Charlie St. Cloud. Over the weekend he showed off the look at the Deauville Film Festival in France with a sharp-looking suit and tie ensemble.
Is this part of Efron's effort to take on the serious film roles and can the sexy 'stache help to turn his recent box office fortunes around?
Charlie St. Cloud performed poorly when it opened in the United States, taking in an unimpressive $12.1 million during its opening weekend. This despite Efron cast as the leading man in the somber story about his quest to keep a promise to his dead brother at the expense of his love life.
Efron's previous feature, Me and Orson Welles, also underperformed earlier in the year for the movie golden-boy who has had hits with the three High School Musicals, Hair Spray and the comedy 17 Again.

The star had his chance to get back into the movies his fans have traditionally reacted well to.

Efron famously signed onto a remake of the 1984 classic Footloose alongside country singer Julianne Hough. but dropped out two months later.

The role of the rebel dancer, played by Kevin Bacon in the original, was given to newcomer Kenny Wormald.
